Rich Thinking! Responses on the passage “Catcher in the Rye dropped from US school curriculum“

The United States government is about to change their curriculum in English by replacing literature books to information texts such as control manuals. This new curriculum will affect 46 states out of 50 states.

My point-of-views:

I do not agree how the US government changed the curriculum of English classrooms. They replaced all the great literature classics into “informal texts”.
English is a course that enhanced students’ literature level and style level. By reading different literatures, I learnt different writing skills and vocabulary. As an English as second language student, it is hard for us to learn vocabulary.  It will be very boring if we only learn vocabulary through different reading and writing exercises. By reading through a story we are interested in, we can learn vocabularies more quickly.  Non-fictions can also let us reflect on our own life. Some of the non-fictions will develop what they want to express to readers through content and characters. By evaluating and analyzing the characters in English course, we will be able to examine these social issues or darkness in heart. We may find the same case in the content is actually happening in the real world. We will be able to reflect on it automatically in our mind. If we just read “informal texts”, not even they are bored enough to lower students’ interest in learning, they do not help one to grow. If learning is just a preparation for future workplace, then we are all robots. Human has their own brain and values to develop and grow as time flies. We have our own mind to determine things. Sometimes, the school and parents may not be the right party to teach us these, and we may need to look for the non-fictions to give us answer. Being success in workplace is also very important; however, learning should not be preparing for this. It is a process for us to become more mature and enrich our human values and experiences. Life will become so much bored if informal texts replaced non-fictions.
